How a hookah coal brand became a living world — by building two brand ambassadors assembled entirely from their own product's anatomy.
COCODALYA produces premium hookah coal — a product defined by ritual, culture, and sensory experience. Hookah culture is inherently social, deeply visual, and fiercely brand-loyal. Clients don't just buy coal; they build sessions around it. The challenge was to give COCODALYA a face — or two — that could inhabit that culture authentically.
The brief was not to create a mascot. It was to create a world. A persistent brand universe that could generate content, carry narrative, and build equity over time — independently of any single campaign or product launch.
Most brand characters are inspired by the product. COOAL and SPARK are built from it. Every component of their anatomy is a real hookah part — tubes, valves, hoses, bowls, fittings, coals. The characters don't represent the product. They are the product, disassembled and reassembled into living form.
This creates a layer of meaning that rewards the hookah community specifically. A casual observer sees two striking robot characters. A hookah enthusiast sees a braided silicone hose as dreadlocks, a coal box as a torso, valve handles as joints. The deeper you know the product, the richer the character becomes.
The design process began not with character sketches but with a parts inventory. Each body component was mapped to a specific hookah element before any visual development began.
| Hookah part | Character body part | Design meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Braided silicone hose | Dreadlocks / cable hair | The signature detail — immediately ownable, impossible to copy. The hoses that carry smoke become the character's most expressive feature. |
| Coal box / tray | Chest / torso panel | The brand's core product sits at the heart — literally. The matte black coal box bearing the COCODALYA logo becomes the character's identity badge. |
| Bowl / head piece | Skull / head structure | The bowl — where the coal lives — becomes the head. The source of heat is also the source of thought. |
| Valve fittings | Joints / knuckles | Metal fittings become the articulation points — the mechanical joints that give the characters movement and gesture. |
| Coal glowing state | Eyes (illuminated) | The moment coal ignites — the product's defining instant — becomes the gaze. COOAL's eyes are red-hot coals. SPARK's are the amber light of ignition. |
| Base / stem | Legs / lower body | The hookah base — the grounding element — becomes the legs. Stability and structure. |
| Leather belt wrap | Belt / waist detail | Decorative wrap material used in premium hookahs becomes a streetwear-coded belt — bridging craft culture and style culture. |
COOAL and SPARK were designed as a complementary pair — sharing the same anatomical DNA but expressing opposite energies. Together they tell the complete story of the product experience: the raw material and the ignition that activates it.
Static characters are forgotten. Characters in motion — placed in situations, given context, given tension — build equity. The COOAL & SPARK series places them in real-world environments relevant to hookah culture: outdoor sessions, urban nights, travel, community. Each scene deepens the brand world without requiring a new product message.
The hookah community is highly visual and culture-forward. They share imagery, they discuss aesthetics, they recognise craftsmanship. COOAL and SPARK were designed to reward that community's eye — the dreadlocks as hoses, the chest plate as a coal box, the glowing eyes as ignited coal. The deeper you know the product, the more the character means.
As a persistent brand asset — owned outright, stored in COCODALYA's Brand Library, deployable in any future production — COOAL and SPARK will increase in value with every episode produced. Each new scene adds a layer to the world. The characters age into icons.
COOAL began as a single character commission under Frame99's Digital Totem service — a 7-day Lab Phase to synthesise the full character DNA: form, texture, expression system, and the hookah-part anatomy mapping. SPARK was added as a companion character in a subsequent commission, sharing the same anatomical logic with a distinct material palette. The ongoing episodic series runs under the Brand Imagery and Social-First Ecosystems service categories — new worlds, same characters, same Brand Library.
